Anna Veith: My life in the mountains

Life after professional skiing shows no signs of slowing down for Austrian hero Anna Veith. The former Olympic champion and mother-to-be shares her secrets for keeping fit in the great outdoors.

Anna Veith has always been at home in the mountains. At 25 years old, she was an Olympic champion, three-time World champion and a double World Cup winner. When injury forced her retirement in May 2020, aged 30, she could have retreated to an indoor life. But that was never an option.

“Nature and the mountains are what inspire me most,” she says. So today she uses her Schladming base as the starting point for all her new adventures. And with her first child due in June 2021, Anna believes there’s never been a more important time to keep fit and active.

“I love the feeling I get when the training is done. There’s that certain satisfaction of having done something good for yourself."

“I have a lot to do – different cool topics with my partners and the further development of my own projects – but I make sure I do sports regularly. I do mixed workouts, ski or go ski touring. And of course long walks are currently on my agenda during my pregnancy.”

Even in the bleakest times, movement has been her solace. Anna ruptured her cruciate ligaments in 2015 and 2019. She says: “My family and friends were a great support. But above all, physical training was important for me. A regular rehabilitation and training plan kept me motivated so I could get stronger again step by step.

Anna first skied aged two. By five, she was lining up for her first race. She was a four-time junior world champion in her teens and competed in her first World Cup at 17. So she knows exactly what it takes to perform when it matters.

“The best piece of advice I ever got was ‘listen to yourself and go your own way,” she says. “I never had any special rituals before races, but after racing or training I always make sure I get good sleep. It’s the best thing for a speedy recovery.”

She looks back on her career with pride and amazement. “My family’s always been into skiing. My cousin, who’s one year older than me, took me to the ski club training. I had a lot of fun, enjoyed it from the beginning and loved the team spirit.”

Today, though, Anna’s focus is on the arrival of the newest member of her team. The mountains of Austria will soon be just that little bit busier. That’s why we asked Anna to make her On recommendations now – before she has her hands full with other things…
