Shoe advice
It depends on many factors, such as running style, weight, and the surface you run on. But generally, shoes (not just On shoes) last up to 300 miles (approx. 482 km) depending on the model and materials used. For example, some of our styles, such as the Cloudboom Echo, are designed for high-performance racing, so naturally, they won't have the same durability as an all-day shoe like the Cloud 5.
On comes from Switzerland, so our products have been tested throughout different seasons and landscapes. We have Performance Running shoes for running city streets wherever you may be, and our Performance Outdoor collection will support you when you hit the trails. For On Apparel, each product's page indicates water-resistant, waterproof, or windproof.
While On Performance Running shoes were designed specifically for running purposes, they are excellent for all-day comfort and can be used for walking, exploring, or mixed workouts. You can chat with the Happiness Delivery Team by visiting our Contact Us form to ask for advice about which shoe is the best for your needs!
If you're unsure which size you wear in our footwear or apparel, each product page has a size chart and fit recommendation. For Performance Running and Performance Outdoor models, the standard recommendation is one size bigger than your everyday shoe size. The Japanese sizing is in centimeters, so you can also measure your foot by standing barefoot with your heel against a wall, adding about 1 cm to your measured size for an indication of what size will work for you.
The primary difference is that men's shoes are designed wider than women's. Customers are free to purchase shoes of any gender, though! Women's shoes are a 1.5 size larger than men's (so a men's size 7 is a women's 8.5 in US sizes). We just recommend testing it out first at a retail location if possible.
We have certain models that are available in wide sizes. To find these select styles and colors for men and women, simply filter using the "Wide Fit" filter on the left-hand side of any product listing page. Not available in all countries.
On shoes are not slip-resistant. We have waterproof models and Trail Running shoes that have an emphasis on traction and performance, but we do not offer a nonslip model at this time.
Our Australian and New Zealand sites show shoes in US sizes.
Ask an On Expert
Well, it helps! We have a large variety of products for specific uses, what makes CloudTec® unique is how it adapts to each individual. On offers models that have added support for runners who traditionally overpronate and models with maximum cushioning for runners who traditionally oversupinate. For pronation, we recommend starting by filtering on the webshop for “Stable” and for supination filtering for “neutral” or “forward rolling.” For more specific recommendations, you can talk to a Happiness Deliverer via our Contact Us form.
On has great models for runners in need of support. The Cloudflyer 4 and the Cloudrunner are built with larger cloud elements, a heel counter, a wider last, and added additional stability with a unique Speedboard®.
With our CloudTec® technology, your On shoes adapt to your particular running style, regardless of how you move whether bow-legged or knock-kneed. If the condition is more extreme, however, you may be well advised to also work with your preferred medical professional to get what is best for your individual needs.
Our shoes offer running comfort and soft landings for wearers of all sizes. For heavier-set runners, for example, to get the full benefit of CloudTec® you will want a model with the most cushioning. The best models will be the Cloudmonster, the Cloudstratus 3, or the Cloudflyer 4. The Cloudmonster delivers with monster-level cushioning and our largest cloud elements. The Cloudstratus 3 doubles it up with dual layers CloudTec® for maximum cushioning. The Cloudflyer 4 is a popular choice that combines elevated comfort with supreme cushioning.
Yes, of course. Please note that while all of our insoles are interchangeable, some are reinforced with glue to avoid shifting - those too can still be carefully removed and replaced as needed. Depending on the orthopedic, we typically recommend a model with a wider base or going up a half size. Changing the insoles shouldn't affect the overall sensation of the shoe, as the unique features of On shoes come primarily from the midsole and technology of the foam used.
Various foot types (flat feet, fallen arches, hollow feet, or splay feet) work well with On shoes. CloudTec® is designed to adapt to each individual to work with everyone's unique gait. On shoes are for everyone, no matter the foot!
Shoe Fit: Your feet swell when you run, so your running shoe should be at least a half of a size bigger than your street shoe with a little room in your toebox. If your shoe has an extra eyelet where you tie your shoes you can utilize the runners loop for a tighter fit around the heel — 1) You start by taking the end of each lace and inserting it on the same side into the extra eyelet to create a loop. 2) You then take the end of the lace and cross it over the shoe and through the opposite loop. 3) Pull the lace ends up and out a few times in order to shrink down the loops so that they hold the lace securely on each side. 4) Finish by tying your shoes in the normal way. Socks: Buy socks specifically made for running. Look for socks made of synthetic fiber (not cotton) as these fibers wick moisture away from your feet. Running socks are anatomically shaped, helping prevent the sock from bunching up and causing blisters. Also, buy socks with a smooth surface and no seams. Shop our running socks here. For additional resources, feel free to talk to an expert at a specialty running store. See who we work with here.

Apparel
Our apparel line is made of various premium technical materials, which may include four-way stretch polyamide, lyocell, stretchable poly/elastane, merino wool, cotton, and lightweight Japanese fabrics. We're working towards using 100% certified organic cotton and 100% mulesing-free wool. Many of our apparel items feature micro-ventilation patterns and technical mesh paneling for extra breathability. You can check out our product pages for detailed fabric and material content.
Absolutely! While On designs all of our apparel with performance in mind, we work hard to make our apparel look as good as it feels. Whether on the track, on the trail, or exploring your favorite city.
Washing instructions
If your shoes need a good cleaning, first and foremost, do not put them in a washing machine! To keep your On shoes clean, it is best to brush any dirt or debris off after they have been used. If you need to wash them, wash them by hand only using warm water after removing the insoles and laces. It is best to wash your shoes as seldom as possible. Go here for more specific instructions.
Each item of On apparel or accessories will be cared for differently to maintain their peak performance. You will find each item's specific care instructions on the item's tag. You will also find more detailed information on the product page!
Laces and insoles
On's Cloud family includes the Cloud 5, Cloud 5 Waterproof, Cloud 5 Terry, Cloud 5 Push, Cloud 5 Fuse, Cloud 5 Combo, and Cloud 5 Coast. They all feature our signature speed lacing system. We want to help you slip on your shoes or flick them off with ease. These models were specially designed to support speed lacing so it won't work with our other shoes. If you need to adjust for a tighter fit, you can retie the knots at the ends for a more snug fit. Most Cloud 5 family shoes come with an additional pair of conventional laces in the box so you can decide how you want the shoe to work for you, but not all models in this family do.
We currently don’t sell laces online. But… if your laces don't fit well or have quality issues, you can ask for a new set from our Happiness Delivery team via this request form.
We don't recommend using speed laces with On's other models because they are not designed to support them. They would likely not fit. If you're interested in elastic laces, a new pair of laces, or desire a different color, we recommend checking out a third-party lace brand or visiting a specialty running store. We currently do not sell laces on our webshop.
If you're interested in learning more about different lacing options, see this article.
We only include a set of extra laces for the Cloud 5 family shoes. The Cloud 5, the Cloud 5 Waterproof, the Cloud 5 Push, the Cloud 5 Combo, the Cloud 5 Fuse, and the Cloud 5 Terry. We do not send extra laces for the Cloud 5 Coast, though. We do this to give customers who prefer conventional laces over speed lacing the option. All of our other models come with just one set of conventional laces, custom installed.
Each one of our insoles is custom-made for the shoe model, size, and color, so we aren't able to offer replacements at this time.
