LightSpray™
LightSpray™ is an ultralight technology revolutionising how we move. In just three minutes, a robot creates a precision-engineered, one-piece upper with a seamless, distraction-free fit. Less waste. Lower emissions. Lighter than humanly possible. Check out more information about the technology here.
The LightSpray Cloudboom Strike is the first On racing shoe made with LightSpray™ technology. It features an ultra-thin, seamless and lace-free LightSpray™ upper, which is precision-sprayed for support. The result is in an exceptionally lightweight shoe weighing just 170g. Check out the product here.
The making of a conventional running shoe upper usually consists of several process steps: raw material production, yarn creation, textile formation (e.g., weaving or knitting), preparation, coloration, additional finishing, cutting and then assembly through bonding and sewing.
Every step involves energy consumption, logistics and the creation of waste from materials and water.
At our facility in Korea, this manufacturing innovation has the potential to reduce carbon emissions related to upper production by 65% compared to other On racing shoes.
Yes, all the emissions data is based on a 3rd party LifeCycle Assessment (LCA) performed by Vaayu. You can find more information in the final report here.
The LightSpray™ upper on the LightSpray Cloudboom Strike is not currently made with recycled materials. But we'll continue to explore ways to incorporate recycled materials as the technology advances.
In manufacturing anything, the most energy-intensive step is generating heat. With LightSpray™, heat is only needed to melt the polymer. But we've cut out all the other processes that require heat in traditional manufacturing, reducing overall energy consumption.
We're taking our robot to select cities around the world. Discover where you can experience LightSpray™ live at on.com/lightspray.
This is a real breakthrough. But it's just the beginning. Watch this space.

The shoe's supportive structure means you can stretch the top slightly to put it on. The textile-like material wraps around your foot securely. Unlike other sock-like shoes that use stretchy, elastic knit textiles, LightSpray™ achieves its stretch through the unique looping of the yarn itself.
The robot can be programmed to control the thickness of the upper in specific areas, by adjusting the tightness and overlap of the filament loops. This technique allows for precise support in high-speed running scenarios. For example, around the heel, the fabric is thicker to keep the foot locked in, whereas on the instep, it's more stretchy and thinner.
We would recommend wearing a sock. There's no lining in a LightSpray™ shoe, you stand directly on the foam so you may want the additional comfort layer.
