What to wear to Pilates
Every movement in Pilates asks for presence. The right outfit helps you stay in it. Made to flex, support and stay out of the way, these pieces let you move with intention from start to finish.
Pilates looks gentle, but it’s quietly powerful. Just ask Olympic sprinter Kendall Baisden. For her, Pilates is part-cross-training, part-ritual. It builds strength and sharpens focus for moments on the track, or off.
Your practice is precise. Your outfit should be too. The right layers help you stretch deeper, stay present and move with control. Soft, stretchy fabrics and lightweight layers are a must. Look for pieces that stay in place so your attention can stay on your practice.
In this guide, you’ll find what to wear to Pilates, whether you’re heading to your first class or deep into your weekly rhythm. From supportive tops to flexible bottoms and thoughtful extras, here’s how to feel confident and fully in flow.
Clothing that flows with you
Your Pilates outfit should feel just like the session: supportive, intentional and made to move. Whether you’re on the mat or the reformer, the goal is the same. Flow without distractions.
For Baisden, versatility is everything. Her workouts shift daily, so her wardrobe does too. “I gravitate toward things that let me move between moments,” she says. “Something that works as a workout basic, but also a stylistic one.”
Comfort starts with fit, but the real test is how it functions. Choose pieces that feel secure without squeezing, soft without losing structure. You want ease through every stretch, fold and hold without needing to adjust.
Stick with breathable fabrics that help manage heat as your body warms up. Skip the zips, drawstrings or bulky seams. They tend to get in the way, especially during floor work or time on the reformer. And don’t forget grip socks. They keep you steady on the moving platform, adding both traction and hygiene.

Tops that move with purpose
In Pilates, what you wear up top completes your look and encourages alignment and focus. A snug, form-fitting top helps your instructor read your posture and offer subtle but important adjustments.
Reach for a fitted tee like the Performance-T or a supportive sports bra. Prioritize comfort with no fuss. No extra fabric. Just structure where you need it, and freedom where you don’t.
In reformer classes, a streamlined fit helps to keep movement smooth and fabric out of the way (and out of the machine). Choose close-fitting tops with plenty of stretch and breathability to follow your every reach and twist.
If you tend to warm up fast, moisture-wicking materials help regulate sweat and keep you focused. If you like to keep things simple, matching sets offer an easy, elevated way to feel pulled-together and performance-ready.
Breathable bottoms
In Pilates, every twist, lift and hold calls for gear that stays in place. The last thing you want to notice is your tights sliding or bunching when you’re trying to stay centered.
Form-fitting bottoms are the go-to. High-waisted leggings like the Studio Tights, or streamlined shorts like the Train Tights ½, offer stretch and a no-slip fit.
Loose-fitting bottoms can shift as you move or shift up during floor work, making it harder to stay in the moment. Form-fitting styles keep you comfortable and covered while also helping your instructor track alignment and posture.
Look for light, breathable fabrics that keep you cool as you warm up. These women’s tights and men’s tights are solid choices thanks to their soft design, made to handle your deepest stretches. Baisden prefers the Movement ¾ Tights. “The compression of the tights is interesting because it helps me feel where I'm cueing movements from,” she says.

Grip socks only
Pilates is a no-sneakers zone. On the mat, you can go barefoot or wear socks. But in reformer classes, grip socks are the gold standard.
The tiny rubber grips help you stay grounded, especially when the platform starts to slide. They boost traction and protect your feet so you feel steady through every push, pull and hold.
Some studios require them. Even if yours doesn’t, they’re worth it. Options like the Merino Ultra offer anti-slip tech that helps you stay focused. Pilates shoes also exist, but most people stick with socks. Just remember, whatever you wear to class, be ready to change into grip socks.
Proper-fitting sports bra
Pilates may be low-impact, but a well-fitting sports bra keeps you secure through every reach, twist and fold.
Look for soft, flexible options like the Studio Bra. If you need more support, look for thicker straps for extra comfort. Skip underwires or rigid clasps. Nothing should dig in or restrict your movement.
For Baisden, she loves to wear the Movement Bra. “I like my arms to be out, and to feel less restricted in my torso,” she says. “Having that feeling of freedom is very important to extend through my neck or my arms, and if I'm trying to curve my back I don’t want anything restricting.”
The right sports bra should feel like it’s part of you. Secure but never stiff. Supportive without constriction. When it fits just right, you can move through your practice with confidence and ease.

Details that make a difference
What you bring to Pilates class is just as important as what you wear. The right accessories can help you stay focused and present.
Here are a few things to pack for a smooth session:
- Hair ties, hair clips or headband
- Water bottle
- Small towel
- Mat
- Layers
- Backup socks
- Gym bag (like the Speed Pack 18L Lite)
Show up with what supports you, and leave what doesn’t. It’s all part of building a practice from head-to-toe.

Find your form in the perfect Pilates outfit
Pilates is about presence, and the right gear helps you reach for the moment faster. Now that you know what to wear, step onto the mat or reformer feeling prepared.
For beginners, aim for two or three sessions a week to give your body time to adapt. Most classes run 45 to 60 minutes, but the benefits of movement carry on long after the studio.
