LightSpray™
LightSpray™ is a new high performance upper technology crafted by a revolutionary single-step manufacturing process. LightSpray™ ultralight uppers are sprayed, not built, in a fast one-step process, automated by a robotic arm at On Labs in Zurich. It reduces CO₂ emissions, paving the way for a circular future and faster, localized manufacturing.

The Cloudboom Strike LS is the first On shoe made with LightSpray™ technology. It features an ultra-thin LightSpray™ upper which is precision-sprayed for support, seamless and lace-free, resulting in an exceptionally lightweight shoe weighing just 170g. Check out the product here.
The Cloudboom Strike LS, which features LightSpray™ technology, launched in 2024 in limited quantities. Now, it's back. A fresh new colorway drops on April 10, 2025 in select stores. Be quick – there's a limited amount.

The making of a conventional running shoe upper usually consists of several process steps: raw material production, yarn creation, textile formation (e.g. weaving or knitting), preparation, coloration, additional finishing, cutting and then finally assembly through bonding and sewing. Every step involves energy consumption, logistics, and the creation of waste from materials and water. The unique LightSpray™ assembly process is a much more efficient process. It minimizes waste, eliminates the need for glues and produces 75% less CO₂ than our other premium uppers. It also vastly reduces the total number of parts, and means we can create LightSpray™ shoes wherever we have a robot lab – saving on transport miles too.
The LightSpray™ upper in the Cloudboom Strike LS is not currently made with recycled materials. We will continue to explore ways to include recycled materials as the technology expands in the future.
Yes, all the emissions data is based on a 3rd party LifeCycle Assessment (LCA) performed by Vaayu. You can find more information in the final report here.
The shoe's supportive structure means you can stretch the top slightly to put it on. The textile-like material wraps around your foot securely. Unlike other sock-like shoes that use stretchy, elastic knit textiles, LightSpray™ achieves its stretch through the unique looping of the yarn itself.
The robot can be programmed to control the thickness of the upper in specific areas, by adjusting the tightness and overlap of the filament loops. This technique allows for precise support in high-speed running scenarios. For example, around the heel, the fabric is thicker to keep the foot locked in, whereas on the instep, it's more stretchy and thinner.
We would recommend wearing a sock. There's no lining in a LightSpray™ shoe, you stand directly on the foam so you may want the additional comfort layer.
This is a real breakthrough in manufacturing. It's just the beginning – and the potential is huge. Watch this space!
In manufacturing anything, the thing that takes the most energy is when you need to generate heat. So, with LightSpray™ the most energy-hungry part of the process is the heat needed to melt the polymer. But we've cut out all the other processes that need heat in traditional manufacturing, which hugely cuts the overall energy consumption.
They'll be tested for quality control. Any that don't make the cut will be used for samples and demos in our other locations.
